The Notion MCP is a huge step forward when it comes to actually useful AI workflows.
After less than five minutes of setup time, I watched AI plan my entire week in Notion. It found my priorities, checked my tasks and created time blocks – all from a simple prompt.
No more screenshot-and-ask workflows. No more manual task scheduling. Just pure AI automation working directly inside my Notion workspace.
All of this is possible without writing a single line of code thanks to the Notion Model Context Protocol (MCP), and it’s going to fundamentally change how you work with Notion.
Update 2026: This guide now uses Notion’s hosted MCP server, which is the setup Notion recommends. You sign in with your Notion account and you’re done: no Node.js, no API token, no config file. The older local package (makenotion/notion-mcp-server) is no longer actively maintained or supported, so only use it if you have a specific reason (see the note at the end of the setup section).
What is the Notion MCP and Why Should You Care?
Notion MCP is Notion’s server for the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that Anthropic released in late 2024. It allows AI assistants like Claude to directly take actions in your Notion workspace.
You can think of it as a handbook with specific instructions where Notion explains to the AI how it can operate and navigate through Notion, find information, update database items, or create whole new systems.

Instead of copying and pasting information or taking screenshots, you can now have AI take real actions in Notion
Before MCP: “Claude, here’s a screenshot of my tasks. Can you help me prioritise my week?” With that result, you can go back to Notion and make these changes yourself
After MCP: “Claude, please look at my Notion workspace, find my priorities, and schedule my week?” Just watch as Claude actually takes the actions for you
In other words, MCP eliminates the AI workflow bottleneck that’s been frustrating for a while now – this feeling that you still have to take so much manual actions to put recommendations into practice.
The Old Way vs. The New Way
Previously, using AI with Notion meant:
- Taking screenshots of your workspace
- Manually copying text between apps
- Getting recommendations you had to implement yourself
- Losing context between AI conversations
With Notion MCP, AI can:
- Read your databases directly
- Create and update pages automatically
- Schedule tasks based on your priorities
- Connect information across your entire workspace
- Remember context from your Notion system
Bottom line: You’re no longer limited to AI advice. Now you get AI execution.
What You Need to Get Started
Setting up the Notion MCP takes two things, and neither needs any technical knowledge:
- An AI app that supports MCP. This guide uses Claude (in the browser, the desktop app or on mobile). ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Codex and many other tools work too; see below.
- A Notion account. Any plan works, including Free.
A free Claude account works for the setup, but you might run into chat message limits quickly. A paid plan gives you more room when Claude works through a large workspace. You can use Claude in the browser or download the app from claude.ai/download.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide (Claude)
Step 1: Add the Notion connector
- Open Claude in the browser or the desktop app
- Go to Customize → Connectors and click the + button
- Find Notion in the list (it’s also listed in the Claude Marketplace)
- Click Connect
On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner has to add the Notion connector for the organization first: Organization settings → Connectors → Browse connectors.
Step 2: Sign in to Notion and choose your workspace
- Sign in with your Notion account when the authorization window opens
- Choose the workspace Claude should work in
- Allow access
That’s the whole connection. Claude now works with your own Notion permissions: it can read and change everything you can read and change in that workspace. There’s no separate token to create and no page-by-page sharing.
Step 3: Switch the connector on in your chat
In a new chat, click the + button, open Connectors and make sure Notion is switched on. Switch it off in chats that don’t need Notion.
Step 4: Decide what Claude may do without asking
In Customize → Connectors → Notion, you can choose for each Notion tool whether Claude may use it freely, needs your approval first, or can’t use it at all. A good starting point: let Claude search and read freely, and ask for approval on the tools that create, update or move pages.
Using Notion MCP in Other AI Tools
Every AI tool connects to the same server address, https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, and signs in the same way:
- ChatGPT: Settings → Plugins → Notion → Connect. ChatGPT connects one Notion account at a time; to switch, disconnect and sign in again. Whether ChatGPT can also create or change pages depends on your ChatGPT plan and your workspace settings.
- Claude Code: run
claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, then type/mcpin Claude Code to sign in. - Cursor: add the server address to
.cursor/mcp.json, then enable Notion under Customize in Cursor’s sidebar and sign in. - VS Code: add the server address to
.vscode/mcp.json, run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette, start Notion and sign in.
Notion keeps instructions for more tools in its MCP setup guide for developers.
What about the old local setup? Earlier versions of this guide installed Node.js, created an internal connection token and ran the makenotion/notion-mcp-server package from a config file. Notion no longer actively maintains that package. It’s only worth it if you need fully automated access without a sign-in step, which the hosted server doesn’t support yet.
Testing Your Setup
Once the connector is on, test your connection:
- Open a new chat with the Notion connector switched on
- Ask: “Search my Notion workspace for my task database and tell me what it contains.”
- Claude should find the database and describe it
- Try a simple task: “What tasks do I have in my Notion database?”
If Claude can see your tasks, congratulations—you’re ready to start automating!

Advanced Tips for Power Users
Voice Integration with Wispr Flow
Combine Notion MCP with voice dictation tools like Wispr Flow to control Notion entirely through speech:
“Hey Claude, check all tasks on my to-do list as complete and set their status to done.”
This creates a truly hands-free Notion experience where you can manage your workspace while walking, driving, or multitasking.
Connect Multiple Workspaces
Each Notion MCP connection is signed in to one workspace. If you work across several (personal, work, client projects), check which one you signed in to before asking for changes, and disconnect and reconnect the Notion connector to switch.
Priority Journaling System
Create a “Priority Journal” page where you regularly update what matters most to you. Claude can reference this to make better scheduling decisions and ensure your automation aligns with your current goals.
Cross-Database Automation
Use the Notion MCP to connect related databases. When you complete a project task, Claude can automatically update client status, create follow-up reminders, and archive completed items.
Common Issues and Solutions
“Claude can’t access my Notion workspace”
Check these items:
- Is the Notion connector switched on in this chat (+ → Connectors)?
- Did you sign in to the right Notion workspace? If not, disconnect and connect again.
- Can you open the page yourself in Notion? Claude only sees what your account can see.
- On a company workspace: has your Notion admin limited which AI apps may connect? Enterprise workspaces can do that.
- After Notion adds new MCP tools, disconnect and reconnect the connector so Claude picks them up.
“Claude sees old information”
MCP reads live data, but Notion may need a moment to sync changes. Try asking Claude to “refresh” or wait a few seconds between major updates.
“Changes aren’t appearing in my calendar”
Make sure your task database has a calendar view set up and your date properties are configured correctly.
You’ll also need Notion Calendar properly set up for your account and then add the specific task view to your calendar.
Claude works within your existing Notion structure.
The Future of AI-Powered Notion
This is just the beginning. As MCP as a technology standard evolves, we’ll likely see:
- Deeper integrations with other productivity tools
- More sophisticated automation capabilities
- Advanced AI analysis of your productivity patterns
- Predictive task scheduling based on your work habits
The companies and individuals who adapt to AI-powered workflows early will have a significant advantage as this technology matures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Notion MCP safe to use with sensitive data? A: Notion MCP runs on Notion’s servers and works with your own Notion permissions, so the AI can reach everything your account can. Choose the workspace deliberately when you sign in, require approval for the tools that change content, and treat text Claude reads from your pages as information, not as instructions. When you give Claude access to that data, the usual data processing rules for AI apply.
Q: Will this work with Notion’s free plan? A: Yes. Connecting and the basic search, read and write tools work on every Notion plan. Some tools do more on Business or Enterprise with Notion AI, such as searching your connected apps, advanced search filters, meeting notes and unlimited database queries. One catch in Free workspaces with more than one member: Notion now enforces the 1,000-block limit on writes from connected apps, and says Notion MCP follows a separate policy that it hasn’t published yet. Solo Free workspaces and paid plans have no block limit.
Q: Can I use this with other AI assistants besides Claude? A: Yes. MCP is an open standard, and Notion’s server works with other AI assistants like ChatGPT, as well as Cursor, VS Code and Codex. See “Using Notion MCP in Other AI Tools” above.
Q: What happens if I accidentally give Claude the wrong instructions? A: You can always undo changes in Notion manually, and you can be specific about what Claude should and shouldn’t modify. Until you’re comfortable, set the tools that create or change content to need your approval (Customize → Connectors → Notion).
Q: Do I need Notion AI for this? A: No, this works independently from Notion AI. You are using the AI functionality of Claude to directly access Notion. Think of it as training a personal assistant to click for you in Notion. A few extras, like searching your connected apps (Slack, Google Drive and others) through MCP, do need Notion AI on a Business or Enterprise plan.
